HDF Relief Activities Updated 28 October 2005

Summary of Progress: 16th October to October 26, 2005:

  • Over 18 tons of food distributed
  • 4,000 Blankets dispersed
  • 550 Tents provided
  • 2,000 patients treated

Detailed Report:
HDF began relief activities in Bugna village of Union Council Dhalli, Muzaffarabad, right after the earthquake by setting up a base camp. Bugna (300 Households) is one main village of UC Dhalli surrounded by other villages i.e. Dhalli (150), Ucha (150), Bulandkot (200), Dhatcha (80), Satnara (100), Namutar (150) and Puthian (250). There are about 1500 Households in this UC. The adjacent UCs are Chattar and Danna.

Village Bugna is located approximately 10 km away from Kohala-Muzaffarabad road and is approximately 35 km from of Muzaffarabad city. About 80% of the houses there have been completely destroyed, and the remaining 20% have severe structural damage.

There is no hospital in the area. The nearest one is about 10km away.

HDF Activities Update:

1. Setting up Collection Points
Immediately, HDF set up donation collection points in different regions. Including the national office headquarters, they are:

2. Collection of Relief Goods
Relief goods have been collected from the following regions and brought to the HDF National Office for disbursement:

  • Karachi Region
  • Rahim Yar Khan Region
  • Shamsabad Region
  • Mardan Region

3. HDF Relief Base Camp
Immediately following the disaster, HDF opened a relief camp in Bugna on October 13, 2005 which began providing food, shelter and medical aid to earthquake survivors. Working with the assistance of the Pakistan Army, HDF continues to distribute relief goods and provide the medical aid to individuals from Dhalli, Chattar and Dhanna.

4. Individual Report of Relief Goods Distribution Activities
The following relief goods have been sent to HDF Relief Base Camp at Bugna:

October, 14 - October, 18
HDF dispatched 4 truckloads for Relief Camp containing 350 bags of 20kg flour, 350 bags of food items, 7 cartons of medicine, 75-80 units of quilt/blankets and pillows and many other food and shelter items.

October 17, 2005
150 bags of 20kg flour, 150 miscellaneous food items bags, 7 medicine cartons, 10 floor carpets, 4 bags of shoes, 11 bags of clothing, 12 quilts, 30 digging items and 1 bed sent to Relief Camp.

October 18, 2005
40 bags of 20kg flour, 40 food units, 14 floor carpets and 1 quilt sent to Relief Camp.

October 19, 2005
163 mixed food items, 61 flour bags, 11 pillows, 16 quilts/shawls and 164 digging tools sent to Relief Camp.

October 20, 2005
60 bags of 20kg flour, 58 bundles of bed coverings sent to Relief Camp. (Vehicle 1)

50 bags of 20kg flour, 60 bags of mix foods, 90 bundles of quilts, 36 bed coverings, 83 bundles of towels and 20 bundles of pillows dispatched to Relief Camp. (Vehicle 2)

October 21, 2005
70 bags food items, 54 bags of flour, 20 bags of 20kg flour sent, plus, clothing, 9 bundles of bed sheets and 2 bundles of pillows. (Vehicle 1)
5 bundles of pillows, 6 bundles of bed sheets and clothing (Vehicle 2)

October 22, 2005
2010 blankets, 20 bags of 20kg floor, 5 packets of medicine.

October 23, 2005
60 bags of 20kg floor, 5 dozen eggs, 100 readymade Nan, 5 packets of Rusk.

October 24, 2005
19 bags of 20kg flour, 1 bag of miscellaneous food items, 80 packets of blankets and 15 packets of cloths sent to HDF Relief Camp.

October 26, 2005
5 Tents, 6 Beds, 6 Quilts, 3 Carton Medicine

October 27, 2005
70 additional tents to Bugna

5. Health/Medical Activity
HDF opened a Field Medical Center (FMC) in Bugna on October 16, 2005. FMC staff—headed by PM-Health—is comprised of HDF and volunteer doctors, HDF dispensers, HDF Lady Health Visitors and other HDF professionals. Two types of Health Services—Static (at Base Camp) and Outreach (by mobile team)—are being provided to earthquake survivors.

Daily patient count at the FMC is more than 200 patients per day. Thus far, through 26 October, the totals are:

  • 1974 patients were treated
  • 323 patients were treated in their homes
  • 30 patients were referred to tertiary health care centre
  • Ambulance service was provided to 67 patients

For medicine and HR supply, linkages are developed with Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences Muzaffarabad, C.M.H Muzaffarabad, Pakistan Rangers and Local Chairman Zakat Committee.
