Self-reliance
By YesPakistan.com Staff Writer
About 35 years old, the mother of
two, and wife of a man who lost both
legs in a tragic accident, Gulzara’s
story speaks of overcoming obstacles
and being able to rely on oneself.
Two years ago, when her husband lost
his legs and the ability to work for
even the paltry income he had been
earning until then, Gulzara spent
all their savings towards his treatment.
He remained on crutches, however,
and the entire responsibility for
supporting the family shifted to Gulzara.
At
first, she sold chaat at the door
of a nearby school, but the money
she earned did not suffice. Her life
was impoverished, miserable, and seemed
devoid of any hope whatsoever. She
may not have known it then, but HDF
offered hope for people in situations
like hers.
Gulzara eventually received a Rs.
10,000 loan from HDF to establish
a cloth business, and immediately
began to advertise for her enterprise.
The initiative she demonstrated soon
paid off. Due to her success, she
was able to repay her loan in eight
months instead of one year and her
husband was able to add a side business
in shoe sales. She even received a
second loan of Rs. 20,000 to expand
upon her flourishing business. Gulzara
credits HDF for empowering her to
become self-reliant by helping her
to the means to help herself.
