Project Location and Description:

The proposed project is located in the village Khora Guli Bagh, which is situated at a distance of 10 km from Mardan towards west. the villagers are permanent residents of this area. Their main language is pushto. Main occupation of the villagers is agriculture, live stock rearing and some of them also works as daily wagers. The community enjoys the facility of linked road and electricity, having no government school for boys or girls, there are two primary schools one for boys and one for girls established by HDF.

Project Identification:

The inhabitant of the village formed a DO on date 05/11/2002. With 25 members having Rs. 11,000/- savings. The name of the DO is NAWAY SAHHAR. According to the portfolio opportunity (PoO) the first prioritized need was drinking water supply scheme. HDF team conducted technical and social surveys with the concerned DO and found the scheme feasible.

The Objective of the Project:

The main objectives of the project were:

  • Availability of potable water to the community.
  • Reduction of workload on women.
  • Social cohesion and awareness among the community.
  • Reduction of water born diseases such as cholera, dyhria, dysentery, typhoid etc.
  • Utilization of saved time by women in income generating activities.

Need of the Project:

The water table in this area is at 30ft below the ground surface. But this water is not potable, because of seepage from drains containing sewage impurities of the area, and also due to contamination from fertilizers and agriculture chemicals. For drinking purposes the good quality of water is required, but the economic condition of the villagers was not permit them to use the deep clean /potable water for drinking.

The term potable water means that the water which is safe to drink, pleasant to the taste and usable for domestic purposes or in other words the potable water is one that is free from harmful impurities, harmful salts and harmful bacteria.

In this area the potable water is found up to a depth of 90 feet. Hence the design depth was taken as 90ft average due to variation from site to site. There are 40 households with 320 populations. One hand pump is sufficient for 8 to 12 households. In this case 5 numbers of hand pumps are recommended for a group of 8 households each.

Cost Estimate:

Total construction cost of the project was Rs 58,030 with PPAF contribution of Rs 46,424 and community contribution of Rs11, 606. The community provided the land free of cost. The cost estimate is based on local markets rates. Skilled person with boring equipments were hired from outside the village. GI pipes and hand pumps assembly were purchased from the market nearby. The community itself provided unskilled labours required.

After the completion of the project there was some saving made because of variation of rates in the market? It is the great achievement of the community that they negotiated the rates in the market and purchased a high quality of materials in very reasonable rates, it is because of this reason that the saving has been made. Now the saved money will further be utilized in the construction of latrine in one of the community school established by HDF.

Maintenance Cost:

Maintenance cost is Rs 1741 per annum, which come to Rs 348 per hand pump per annum. As this project is based on groups, therefore each group will collect maintenance fund on the basis of need, as the maintenance of hand pump is casual hence no regular maintenance is required.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT

As the project was proposed to safeguard the health of the community, and to provide potable drinking water to the community (as the project is directly related to the health of the community), therefore all of the environmental aspects were studied and found no negative impact of the project on environment and as such no mitigation measures were needed.

Qualitative Benefits:

Access to drinking water:

This project provided not only a regular source of drinking water at their doorsteps but also met the shortage of water for other households’ requirements.

Time saving:

The time used by the community in fetching water is saved and can be used for other productive purposes.

Capital saving:

The money used by some of the households for purchasing of motor pumps is saved. Similarly, water born diseases are minimized and also saving is made in expenditure on disease control and eradication.

Decrease in workload:

This project greatly helped in reducing workload for community, especially for women folk because traditionally, women are responsible for water fetching for household used.

Impact on health and hygiene:

Availability of potable water greatly helped in improving health and hygiene conditions on the community.
