New Community Health Center

The 28th of June, 2006 marked the opening ceremony of the Human Development Foundation’s new Health Program in Lasi Goth, Khokhrapar, Malir District of Pakistan.

Before HDF entered the area, the nearest medical facility was upwards of ten kilometers away. HDF’s new facility will provide care to the 7000 people in the area plus the 5000 in the surrounding villages Bachal and Khaskhaili. Around 90% of the population are immigrants from the Interior Sindh and the town lacks proper sanitation and waste management systems. The absence of health care facilities has led to a high mortality rate, especially among women and children, with 90% of deliveries being conducted by untrained birth attendants.

The new Community Health Center maintains 9 full-time employees and is located in the middle of Lasi Goth’s main street. Separate entrances for men and women lead into two large rooms, partitioned into four areas, and a bathroom. Since opening, the clinic has seen 25-30 patients a day, conducted over 250 house calls, performed 75 ante natal check-ups, given over 80 tetanus shots to women of reproductive age, conducted family planning services, and given seminars and special training to members of the community. The Community Health Center plans on providing laboratory tests by September of this year, acquiring a vehicle for its home health program and developing a Health and Hygiene curriculum to be taught in schools.

Dr. Mazhar Abbasi, the Human Development Foundation’s Program Manager, Health, said reports that the Center and HDF have received a “very encouraging response from the local communities’ right from the first day” and is optimistic about the future of the Center and the village. He also stressed the importance of the Human Development Foundation’s support and the fact that all of this was made possible by the donations and guidance of the Board of Directors and donors. HDF is excited by the progress being made in Lasi Goth, and will continue to develop new and effective programs.
