Economic Development Component of HDF

SKILLS ENHANCEMENT

In all the efforts, which have been made in the past for poverty alleviation, skill enhancement proved one of the most sustainable remedies against poverty. HDF always focused this component and improved it from time to time because it is the most beneficial and most important aspect in rural development.

The training program of HDF is helpful for the communities in several ways. e.g.

  • Confidence and knowledge building
  • Development of various technical/vocational skills
  • Employment, income generation and self reliance
HDF imparts three types of trainings for its community members
  1. Institutional Management and Entrepreneurship Training: These are the trainings, which continuously build up the knowledge of the community members e.g. Community Management Skills Trainings, Leadership Management Skills Trainings, Natural Resource Management Skills Trainings and Entrepreneurship etc.
  2.  Technical Skills Training: It includes those technical/vocational trainings, which ultimately lead towards the establishment of the profitable enterprises. These profitable enterprises not only increase the income of the individuals but also created the additional employment opportunities for the rest of the community members. e.g. Garments, Tie & Dye, Surf Making, Candle Making, Poultry Farming, Electrician, Refrigeration & A/C, Welding, Plumbing, Carpentry and Computers Hard Ware and Soft Ware etc.
  3. Teachers’ Trainings: Teachers of HDF child friendly schools are trained in different trainings like Joyful Learning, Adult Literacy, Basic Teachers Training, Multigrade Teaching and English Phonics etc.
Major Achievements as of April 30th 2002
  • 213 different trainings have been imparted, 54 to male DOs and 159 to female DOs
  • 3,309 community members have been trained in different skills, 776 were male and 2,263 were females
  • 348 teachers have been trained through 16 different trainings

Garments Training

This training is very popular and also beneficial for all the women folk of HDF-DOs. This training was the main attraction for most of the female DOs formed. The use of this training varies from region to region. In some regions that are far behind from the city area e.g. Zhob and Rahim Yar Khan mostly the women use this training domestically. While in those regions which are near the urban areas, the use of this training is purely for commercial purposes. From the total number of 159 trainings provided to female DOs till April 2002, 75 were related to garments.

The region wise progress is as fallows:

                                MDN- 45 trainings (695 participants)

                                SBD- 8 trainings (102 participants)

                                RYK- 11 trainings (205 participants)

                                ZB- 3 trainings (38 participants)

                KKA- 11 trainings (135 participants)

Karachi Kachi Abadi being very near to Karachi city has a lot of business opportunities. Due to this reason all training products, which trainees prepare during the training are sold to the market. HDF also organized an exhibition on the closing ceremony of one of the basic garments training, which was a good experience for HDF as well as for the trainees. The outputs of the exhibition were:

  • The concept and way of marketing was introduced to the trainees
  • The women’s products were displayed and introduced in the local community
  • HDF program was introduced through this activity at mass level
  • The trainees got maximum return/income from their products
