Monthly Progress Report - August 2004

Brief News

  • Strategic plans for different programs of HDF were prepared to set a long term vision and diretion for each program of HDF.
  • 6 monthly review meeting was held on August 23 and 24, 2004 at the National Office, Rawalpindi. All PMs/Section Heads from National Office and RPMs/TLs from all the regions attended the meeting. This meeting was held to reviwe the overall and regions wise progress of HDF in the previous 6 months. After reviweing the previous progress, plans for remaining part of the year were finalized. New strategies were also devised and discussed to enhance the efficiency in the remaining part of the year 2004. In the same meeting Mr. Fayyaz Baqir (Country Head-UNDP) also gave a presentation about UNDP, he brifed different areas where HDF can colloborate with UNDP. Regonal Heads were asked to explore the possibilities of partnership with UNDP and prepare and submit region specific proposals to National Office.

Foundation Development

  • PM-Foundation Development floated letter of interest to some international donor agencies operational in Pakistan. Positive response was received from 2 donors i.e. CIDA and DFID. Meetings were held with representatives of these organizations and positive responce was found, which will now be followed up.
  • A Ramzan appeal plan was finalized for raising funds. As this activity was planned to be held for the first time, it was decided to start it as a pilot project from the cosmopolitian and industrial city of Karachi. The detailed plan will be prepared and presented in the Board Meeting being held in September for approval.

Performance Improvement Program

  • A comprehensive/detailed survey was conducted at Unit-2 of Rahim Yar Khan Region. Data analysis was done and first draft was circulated among Program Managers for their feedback and policy recommendations.
  • A staff cum program satisfaction survey was conducted in HDF at organizational level. Results were compiled and its analysis is in progress. The results will be shared with the BoD and used by the higher management for refining and further improving the organizational efficiency.

Economic Development

  • Rahim Yar Khan Region achieved 100% credit recovery (both PPAF and HDF) from due for the month of August-2004.
  • The signing ceremony for an integrated Community Physical Infrastructure (CPI) proposal for the next 3 years was held between Human Development Foundation (HDF) and Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF). HDF was represented by COO, PM-Economic Development and PM-Community Physical Infrastructure.

COMMUNITY TRAININGS

  • A Human Resource Development Center was opened in village Karol War of Lahore Region to impart trainings to the community members.
  • 3 months long beautician training was started in Rahim Yar Khan Region. 6 female members from the 3 Development Organizations (DOs) i.e. Ferozan, Taraqi-e- Khawateen, Sharma participated in the training. After getting this training, the participants will be able to start their own enterprises at the local level.
  • 3 Community Management Skills Trainings (CMSTs) were held for office bearers of 23 DOs in Rahim Yar Khan Region. 48 office bearers attended this training. They were briefed about HDF, its mission, vision and goals, the benefits of community based organizations, their role in community development, participatory development concepts, and the responsibilities of office bearers in any Community Based Organizations.
  • A 5 days refresher course for teachers of Child Friendly Schools (CFSs) was held in Rahim Yar Khan from August 4th to 8, 2004. 32 teachers from all the CFSs participated in this training.
  • A Key Chain Making training was held in Shamsabad Region from Aug 4th-19th, 2004 at the Regional Office. 13 people from 7 DOs participated in this training. Resource Person was hired from an NGO "ROOTS", a request was also made to the same NGO for giving work to the community trainees to enable them to earn income.
  • 28 male DO members attended a Community Management Skills Training Workshop in Shamsabad Region. This training is helpful in improving managerial skills of the community members.

STAFF TRAININGS

  • An 8 days training on "Management Information System", "Delinquency Management and Interest Rate Setting" was held at the National Office in collaboration with PPAF. Resource Persons from HDF, PPAF,SRSP and PRSP participated in this training. This training was attended by the Social Organizers and Credit Disbursement & Recovery Officers from all the regional offices. Monitoring officers and PO-Economic Development from National Office also attended this training.
  • PM-Foundation Development attended a 2 weeks training from 1st-14th August, 2004 at LUMS on "Social Enterprise Management Program".
  • The COO Azhar Saleem attended a 3 -days training from 5th-8th August at PPAF on "Leadership-The Care and Growth Model".
  • Accounts Officer of Shamsbad Region "Mr. Gur Mukh" was given a training on "Quick Books Pro" accounting software.

COMMUNITY PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE (CPI)

  • The progress of Community Physical Infrastructure in Mardan Region remained satisfactory i.e. 2 projects of hand pumps have been completed through the Development Organizations (DOs) AL-Falah and Shahbaz Khan. 2 projects of Water Course Linings have been completed through the DOs Zamindar and Khazan Dheri-2. 3 projects of drainage have been completed through the DOs Ittehad, Sahar and Roshni and 1 project of street pavement was completed through DO Naway Kalay while 2 more are in progress.
  • In Rahim Yar Khan Region 3 projects of handpumps have been completed through the DOs Sir Syed and Islah-e-Muashra. 3 projects of Water Course Linings have been completed through the DOs Alvi Unity, Heriyali, and Village Development Organization (Chak 119/1L).

EDUCATION

  • Ms Sobia (supervisor) from Ministry of Education (Education for All Wing- EFA), monitored the Adult Literacy Centers on 2nd-4th August, 2004 which were opened by HDF in collaboration with EFA Wing in Union Council Chirah of Islamabad Region. She expressed her satisfactory views about the ALCs after the visit.
  • Independence Day (14th August) was celebrated with dignity and honor in all Child Friendly Schools of HDF. Special programs were arranged to highlight the importance of this day. The children actively participated and delivered speeches, presented national songs and tableaus. Students with outstanding performances were awarded with prizes and trophies. The functions were attended by local notables, teachers and other community members. A mega event of such kind was organized in Shamsabad Region, where about 1,500/ members participated. Radio Pakistan Zhob aired the program live. In Islamabad Region the COO-Azhar Saleem, PM Finance Aftab Khattak and Training Coordinator- Fazal-e-Rabbi attended the Independency Day celebrations. Information about various educational interventions were shared with participants of the event.
  • Ministry of Education, EFA wing arranged a 3 days refresher course for the ALC teachers from Aug 17th-19 in NISTE Auditorium. The supervisors reviewed the progress of the ALCs and showed their reports to the teachers. Problems were shared and the supervisors tried to solve the problems.
  • Mr. Niaz Khattak President of an NGO "Dihat Dost" and Mr. Zulqarnain Bukhari from "Arbar Resource Center" Multan visited all the NFBE Schools of Islamabad Region on August 19, 2004. They enjoyed the poems recited by the students and asked different questions related to their courses. The guests appreciated the teaching methodologies and encouraged both the teachers and students for their hard work. They were also impressed by the classroom setup/decorum and quality of education.
  • COO and PM-Foundation Development attended a closing ceremony of ALCs arranged by Ministry of Education, EFA Wing on August 25th, 2004 in the National Institute of Science & Technology Education (NISTE) Auditorium of Islamabad. The Secretary Education, Mr. Sajid Hassan was invited as chief guest. A stall was setup by HDF in which course books, brochures and handicrafts made by the communities of the different regions were displayed.

VISITS AND VISITORS

  • Dr Mazhar Abbas-PM Health visited Mardan and Lahore regions for orientation and facilitation purposes. He supervised the existing systems and had meetings with the health staff. In Lahore Region he also met with Dr. Riffat Ashraf of King Edward Medical College (KEMC) to discuss and resolve certain issues pertaining to the HDF-KEMC partnership in Lahore Region.
  • PM Health Dr. Mazhar Abbasi facilitated the visit of representatives from UNDP,NRSP, PPAF and World Bank to Community Health Center in Islamabad.
  • Accounts Officer Mr. Umar Kiani visited Shamsabad Region to impart on job training on "Quick Books Pro" to the newly recruited Regional Accounts Officer Mr. Gur Mukh. Mr. Umar also attended the Mega Event of 14th August, 2004 as a representative from the National Office.
  • Mr. Abu Bakar, referred by HDFNA visited Karachi Kachi Abadi (KKA) Region to see HDF's program activities.
