The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “It is better for one if he takes his rope, gets up early in the morning to go into the mountains, cuts and brings a load of firewood on his back, and sells it, and eats from this and gives charity from it so that God preserves his self-respect. This is better than that he should beg of people who may sometime give him something but may also sometime refuse to.” [Bukhari]
EARTHQUAKE: ONE YEAR LATER

We all remember where we were on 8 October, 2005, when we heard the news of the devastating earthquake that struck Pakistan. Many of us remember those frantic first few hours of confusion, as we sought out more information, or tried to contact loved ones, friends and family to make sure they were alright.

And then, as the news came out about the scope of the destruction, the buildings destroyed, the lives lost, people tried to make sense of things, and—more importantly—wanted to help those who were struggling to put their lives back together again.

The amount of generosity and outpouring of support was truly overwhelming. Our organization was swamped with people who were looking to help. Whether it was volunteering, donating goods or pledging financial support, people were determined to do something to help those in need.

Now, it has been one year since then.

Many things have changed for the better in Pakistan, and, alas, many have not.

We have been part of the rebuilding effort—trying to get people into new homes, or repair existing, damaged ones; building health care facilities and opening new schools for the children.

HDF has expanded its mission to include these activities because they are so sorely needed at this time, while at the same time continuing to operate its programs all over Pakistan.

We at HDF are deeply grateful for all the support that you have given us over the past year as we seek to provide services to the earthquake victims. Truly, we would not have been able to accomplish our success without you.

However, there is much more work to be done. It is important that we do not define ourselves by what happened on 8 October, but rather than what happened after 8 October—how people of all different races, religions, beliefs and walks of life banded together to help those who needed it desperately.

To that end, we have been—and will continue to be successful.

Thank you all,

Bill Breedlove
Executive Director
