TEAMING UP: HDF Partnerships with Other Groups Mean
Even More Good Work
What
do a large medical college, a family fund, and concerned groups of people in
Seattle, Indiana/Kentucky and Boston have in common?
They are all groups who are partnering on projects with the Human Development
Foundation.
“While we reach many people though our programs,” said HDF Executive
Director Bill Breedlove, “forming partnerships with other like-minded
groups or organizations allows us to expand the reach of our services that much
more.”
One of the key partnerships HDF found was with Rawalpindi Medical College,
collaborating on opening a Rehabilitation Center, and to upgrade a training
center at Holy Family Hospital.
The interest in partnering also is on this side of the globe, one example being
HDF’s collaboration with the Pakistani Association of Greater Seattle
on a project to rebuild homes and construct a secular girls’ school.
“We are really excited to work with HDF, as it gives us the opportunity
to help the earthquake victims in Kashmir,” said Munir Rizvi, of PAGS.
Similarly, Dr. Khalid Bhatti, President of the Association of Pakistani Physicians
of Kentucky and Indiana, was excited about his group’s partnership with
HDF on helping to care for children who were orphaned in last year’s earthquake:
“APPKI is proud and humbled to be in partnership with HDF in work to improve
the lives of orphan victims of the earthquake.”
While many of these partnerships involve programs HDF is already operating,
sometimes a group will come to HDF with an idea that is so innovative or useful
that the partnership is instantly understandable.
Such was the case when a group of concerned individuals in the Boston, Massachusetts
began working with HDF on the Zalzala Livestock Initiative, to provide milk
goats to destitute survivors of the 2005 earthquake.
"We
are delighted to be working with HDF on this project," says Thalassa Scholl,
Chairman of the Initiative. "HDF respects the people they help. Their model
of including the recipients in decisions is just what we need to make our project
a success."
Sometimes a partnership can come about when a group wants to work with HDF
on expanding a project already underway. This was the case with the Manzar Family
Fund, who wanted to do a value-added project on top of the activity HDF was
undertaking in Bugna. Working together HDF and MFF began two projects: one,
to improve sanitation in the community by building kitchens, toilets and baths
in homes being rebuilt; and secondly, to start a vocational training program
to help residents gain access to better jobs and brighter futures.
All of these projects are ones that are only possible when partnerships are
created, and HDF is proud of our ability to foster and nurture these partnerships—all
for the goal in providing increased help to the populations we serve.
