Payback
for your education in Pakistan
by supporting others
Take a look at the degrees
hanging up on your wall. If you were educated in Pakistan, especially if you
obtained a Bachelor's Degree or more there, consider what you've gained from
this knowledge.
This knowledge you gained
in Pakistan has not only enlightened your mind and broadened your horizons.
It has also opened many doors of opportunity for you that would have remained
closed had you not been as highly educated. It has helped give you a sense of
dignity and self-confidence. In addition, this higher education has most probably
been a factor in why you and your family enjoy a higher standard of living than
most Pakistanis today enjoy.
Now consider, for all of
this, how much you paid in fees, tuition and other expenses. If you remember
the cost in rupees, convert it into American dollars. Don't be surprised if
it comes out to a few hundred dollars at the most. Then, get a rough estimate
of how much this same level of education would cost in America today. It will
probably be more than $10,000.
Why not pay back Pakistan
for all of this by investing the cost of a college education in America to support
a young Pakistani student. In other words, take the American cost of a college
education today and use this amount to support a Pakistani student
Pakistan's public school
system, especially, is a shambles. Deteriorating buildings, outdated textbooks,
itinerant teachers and chronic underfunding are just some of the symptoms of
a system that is clearly failing Pakistani children and parents. Less than 40
percent of Pakistani children make it to grade five according to an UNICEF report
published in 1997. It's time that that changes.
Here's how you can help.
Once you've found the amount
for your education in American dollars, you have to choose the right person
to invest it in. Look for young people who are bright, talented, honest and
hardworking but underprivileged and cannot afford college. These are the kind
of people you should support. And it's not a person but people, since the amount
of money you'll be investing (at least $10,000) can provide for not just one
student's expenses but several, maybe even a dozen.
Arrange for a trusted and
reliable family member of friend to dispense the fees whenever they are needed.
Make sure that your money is being used for this purpose only. If you've carefully
selected which students can receive your donation, this should not be an issue.
Keep in touch with the students
you help and track their progress. It's not enough to give your money and forget
about the issue. Find out if you can help them in their studies. Can you give
them some academic and career guidance which they probably will not find in
college? Can you steer them into a field that will be more beneficial for Pakistan?
Also, if they are having difficulty with their grades one semester, find out
what's going on. Is there a problem in the family?
By supporting the education
of underprivileged Pakistanis at the college level, you will not only help the
Pakistan raise its number of professionals, but you will also be helping the
nation increase in expertise and professionalism in various fields.
