Pakistan Day Mela in Toronto
By Sarwat Rashid-Perrin
A volunteer HDF-canada
Just days before the Mela, Ontario
was hit with a blackout that threatened
to dampen things. However on the 17th,
the sun shone bright and clear and
all the traffic lights along the way
to the Markham Fair Grounds smiled
at us.
The Mela is always like being swirled
to Pakistan on a magic carpet for
a day. The multi-colored stalls, the
enticing smells of food in the air,
the commotion and music, all makes
you nostalgic.
The Event was graced by a lot of
dignitaries, including Pakistan Consulate
General, Ghalib Iqbal, the Defence
Minister, John McCallum,and the Markham
mayor, W. Don Cousens.
We also had entertainers from Pakistan
for the event, including Haroon,Tafu,
Farooq and the film actress Roop.
The HDF booth was visited by many
families and visitors to Toronto.
It was glorious to see young children
reaching out for their flags or pins,
and realizing they were lucky enough
to have two great countries to love-Pakistan
and Canada."
