Say to the believers that they cast down their eyes and guard their private parts; and say to the believing women that they cast down their eyes and guard their private parts, and reveal not their adornments, save such as is outward; and them cast their veils over their bosoms. Quran 24: 30-31.

Introduction

The Human Development Foundation of North America (HDF) is a not for profit organization "incorporated under the Illinois General Not for Profit Corporation Act of 1986." The scope of our work encompasses "activities and purposes which tax exempt organizations may conduct under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or which may be pursued by a corporation, contributions to which are deductible under Section 170 (c) (2) the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code."

The Foundation was formed in 1997 as the expatriate Pakistani American community's gift to the people of Pakistan on the occasion of the fiftieth (50th) anniversary of Pakistan's independence. The Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA), the Society for International Health, Education and Literacy Programs (SIH) and the Noor Foundation cosponsored the Foundation.

During the first five years of our existence, the Foundation has succeeded in establishing holistic human development initiatives amongst the underprivileged communities in all four provinces in Pakistan. Please find the update on our Project Pakistan in this package.

In addition the Foundation has been able to mobilize the Pakistani American community and establish supporting networks in all major metropolitan areas of the USA. More recently HDF has initiated the establishment of a virtual community amongst the Pakistani Diaspora through its website "YesPakistan.com."

HDF is committed to serving our community, with the primary focus of our work being amongst the underprivileged, helping them get out of the cycle of poverty of resources, knowledge and opportunity. We invite all like-minded people who care, to join our family for our movement for positive social change.

Our Vision: An Empowered Community

The Human Development Foundation seeks to empower disadvantaged people by facilitating a movement for a positive social change.

HDF hopes to establish traditions of philanthropy and volunteerism among our communities, wherever they may be. Ultimately HDF envisions a global network, which works towards the betterment and uplifting of our communities throughout the world. HDF holds the vision of communities, which are prosperous, vibrant, cohesive and ready to face the challenges of the unfolding millennium. Such activities are sustainable only through grassroots support. To achieve these goals, HDF uses and models the philosophy of distributed leadership and shared responsibility, which encourages volunteers to be the leaders in their own spheres of activity.

In the short span of five years, HDF has been successful in achieving the following towards this goal:

1. Develop multiple community-based networks in different cities in the U.S. and Pakistan. Networks in other countries are under development.

2. Rallying hundreds of volunteers who have come together to the cause of human development and help in spreading awareness and raising funds to advance our mission.

3. Thousands of donors who believe in HDF's philosophy of "Helping people help
themselves." They have generously donated for the establishment of projects in Pakistan.

4. Establish a web portal "YesPakistan.com" to facilitate the development of a virtual community of Pakistanis and other like- minded people.

5. Lobby for the cause of Human Development and bring it to the forefront of the national agenda for the policy makers in Pakistan, and which lead to the establishment of the National Commission for Human Development in Pakistan.

6. Started a summer internship program for students with an interest in community mobilization and development.

7. Started a public advocacy and education program for opinion leaders in USA, to inform them of issues of concern to our community.
