Pakistani Group Seeks Feedback on INS Interviews
WASHINGTON, DC, Jan. 15, 2003: Following is a request that we received from
a federation of Pakistani groups on the East Coast. They are having a meeting
with ACLU tomorrow on possible violations of constitutional rights during INS
Call-In interviews. Please send your feedback to Mr. Sohail Muzaffar, President
FAPA, at: zmuzaffar@aol.com
--
FAPA is a federation consisting of twenty-seven New York-New Jersey based Pakistani
cultural and civic associations. We are currently working to assist non immigrant
Pakistani nationals to properly register with INS under 'NSEERS'.
FAPA is also working on the legal front, and in this regard, we have scheduled
a meeting with ACLU in their New York office.
We are looking for information which was posted on through e-mails 6-10 days
ago in which some people who had gone for interviews had given the feedback
saying the INS officials had asked intrusive questions about the faith.
The questions were: 'how many times do you pray? What mosque do you attend?
How much money did you give to the mosque? What imam do you follow? What religious
party do you belong to Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam or Jamaat-e-Islami?
There may be a chance for us to file a law suit based on constitutional protection
of freedom of religion.
'How many time I pray' is not the business of 'the state' to know and register
in their books.
So please search and forward all such e-mails to us so that We can take them
to ACLU meeting tomorrow.
Suhail Muzaffar
