March 23rd 2002 marks the 55th Pakistan Day. Considering that Pakistan has scored the highest increase in literacy level in several decades, we need to reaffirm our commitment to eradicate illiteracy and ignorance from the country. HDF wants you to be a partner in this struggle. This newsletter provides you with practical ways of how to do that.

While we have scored this victory against illiteracy, Pakistanis are all worried about the prevailing domestic lawlessness in Pakistan and India. What Pakistan can do to increase domestic security is a question we explore in this update.

This month we invite you to explore our educational flash movies on Pakistan, as well as the Human Development Foundation's projects and services.

In 2001 alone, the number of HDF's informal schools increased from 41 to 96; HDF now has eight Adult Literacy centers, 67 Parent Teacher Associations and 250 local Development Organizations. In 2001, it disbursed a total of over Rs. 11 million in credit; carried out 170 Skills Training workshops; and benefited at least 10,000 people from 50 villages through its Shehab Zai dam in Baluchistan!

The president of Pakistan appointed the "Task Force on Human Development" this past summer, which was given the responsibility to develop a human development program for Pakistan. On this commission, two of HDF's officers and activists have also been elected. Hopefully, it will provide us with a unique opportunity for collaboration between the government and civil society organizations for the benefit of the masses.
