Independence Day 2003 will commemorate the 227th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Independence Day is a good time to examine who we are and how we got here.

The United States is truly a diverse nation made up of dynamic people. Since this nation's founding, more than 55 million immigrants from every continent have settled in the United States. In fact, with the exception of Native Americans, everyone living in this country is either an immigrant or the descendent of voluntary or involuntary immigrants. Among them are Americans of Pakistani origin. We all stand together in full support of our country, while we hope and make efforts that the countries we have left behind also advance with the ideals of democracy and self-determination.
