Assalamu Alaikum

There was a time when President Lyndon B Johnson visited Pakistan in the late sixties. He was Vice President at that time. There were literally hundreds and thousands of Pakistanis who greeted him on the streets of Karachi. He walked in the midst of people. No one bussed those Pakistanis, they all came by themselves. LBJ walked without much security, shaking hands and talking to people. Memories of his trip and his friendship with Basheer Sarban remained in the Pakistani media for a while.

Can any American president afford to walk with that confidence on any street in the world today? Can he walk on the streets of London?

Why has the world stopped being friends with America? What went wrong?

The world has become a much more violent place for all its citizens. But it is a more risky place for us Americans. What are the strategies one can adopt at a personal level to fight against violence? One starting point is Michael Moore's film, Bowling for Columbine, an award- winning documentary. But on a collective level, America and Pakistan both need an open debate on how our societies and the world can be a safer place for all human beings.

We pray for peace and feel a level of relief that Pakistan is not a part of the current war.

It was LBJ's boss, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, a commander in World War II who said "After all my experience, I have come to hate war. War settles nothing."
