The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said, “It is better for one if he takes his rope, gets up early in the morning to go into the mountains, cuts and brings a load of firewood on his back, and sells it, and eats from this and gives charity from it so that God preserves his self-respect. This is better than that he should beg of people who may sometime give him something but may also sometime refuse to.” [Bukhari]

Recent Developments in Art in Pakistan and Bangladesh

Assalamu alaikum,

More than two months after Pakistan's worst natural disaster, a massive relief effort by Pak-Americans and people of all faiths and countries is showing signs of progress.

Human Development Foundation is continuing its mission of re-building and reviving these devastated communities!

As Bill Breedlove, Executive Director of HDF, reports, "People are so anxious to rebuild, they are not even waiting for the government?s help. We were deluged with requests for raw materials?like aluminum for roofing?and people were actually using the rubble of their homes to begin rebuilding."

"They know that it won?t be easy, and they know that a huge challenge is coming in the shape of the winter. But they are resolute, and we at the HDF are proud to help them."

Please respond generously with a gift of warmth, as brutal winter and Eid-ul-Adha appaoch. We request immediate donations to shelter the earthquake victims.

It has been 34 years when East Pakistan became Bangladesh. Relationship between both countries has since substantially improved through trade, people exchange and time.

Two things remained, however, unresolved: the truth about the suffering of people in that terrible civilwar and the issue of Pakistanis who still live in Bangladesh, popularly known as Biharis. Read more about it in this week's newsletter.

Peace,
HDF Team

A Hospital for the Needy
When the earthquake occurred, of course the first order of business was to tend to the many gravely injured people. Since many of those injured were children who had been in schools that had collapsed, we at the HDF needed to set up something quickly to tend to those children. [read more]

Quake: Thinking Long-Term
Six seconds that shook the earth permanently altered the landscape of Azad Kashmir, northern and northeastern Pakistan, and a small part of Kashmir occupied by India. It could also permanently change the political, social, and economic landscapes in Kashmir and in Pakistan. This could happen in a way that would reward the people who have suffered mightily or it could further compound their difficulties. The future will be shaped by policy makers in Islamabad. This IS the Time to Save Lives!

Poet Iqbal?s Son Regrets 71 Atrocities by Pak Army
On a visit to Bnagladesh, Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Dr Javid Iqbal (son of Allama Iqbal) has blamed the political failure and lack of farsightedness of leadership of the then government for the atrocities in 1971 in East Pakistan, now independent Bangladesh. "I am deeply sorry for the incident," he said. [read more]

A Truth Commission For Pakistan & Bangladesh
As a young Pakistani, I cheered for Pakistan, not knowing what East Pakistanis/Bangladeshis were going through. I was hurt at the creation of Bangladesh very deeply. It was my 9/11 as a Pakistani those days. I have heard the stories of the brutalities of the Pakistani army told to me by generous, hospitable Bangladeshi strangers turned hosts as I wander their streets and villages. But I feel it is not enough. I need to know the truth, as do other Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. [read more]

Recalling a Great Man: Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy
Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy was the prime minister from September 1956 to October 1957. Suhrawardy?s commitment to Pakistan as a single, united nation was an article of faith with him. His patriotism as a citizen of Pakistan could never be questioned. He would state, "There is no difference between East and West Pakistan. We are Pakistanis first and Pakistanis last." [read more]

The Bihari Refugees in Bangladesh
The history of the Bihari refugees goes back to the partition of India in 1947. Their displacement occurred in the wake of communal violence during and in the aftermath of the partition (for example, 30,000 Muslims were killed in the ?Great Bihar Killing? in October-November 1947). [read more]
