Assalamu alaikum,
As I sit here, the sounds of pre-emptive fireworks are crackling and popping outside the window. It is very festive, but it also serves as yet another reminder of how fortunate we are here in America that the sounds of rockets and explosions in the sky only are good things signifying celebration.
Indeed, there is much we have to be grateful for in this country: All of the freedom and opportunity to live our lives in the manner we choose, the ability to succeed through hard work and determination, and the incredible access to the barest essentials of what human beings need?clean water, education, health care, etc.?that sometimes I think many of us take for granted.
As you know, it is not this way everywhere in the world.
The overriding principle of human development is that when people are given access to those essentials, they will become self-sufficient enough to not only survive, but to prosper. Time and time again, we at the Human Development Foundation have seen this happen.
Whether it is building and staffing a girls? secondary school that allows young women to continue their education, or something as simple as installing some hand pumps that give people access to clean and safe water, the programs?and the principles behind those programs?of HDF give people much more than just some educational classes or a glass of water.
Those programs help provide independence.
Please, take a moment or two from your celebration this year and think of those individuals who are not as blessed as those of us in this country. It is only through the ongoing and generous support of our friends that HDF is able to continue to provide those desperately needed services.
Together, we have the power to make incredible changes. Together, we have the power to help people achieve independence.
On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of the Human Development Foundation, I wish you and your family a happy and safe 4th of July.
Peace,
Bill Breedlove Executive Director Human Development Foundation
