Assalm Alaikum Kashi,
The method of estimating the Nisab (minimum amount liable to Zakah) is applicable
to cash ... Zakah becomes due upon reaching the Nisab or more than it

I am used to the fact that in Pakistan gold is weighed in grams rather than ounces, therefore I do not know how many grams make up ounces. Can anyone help?
Dzul: 10/5/2006 3:57:43 AM
To Sara,
Here is the table conversion between imperial system to matriks system:
1. 1 Ounce = 28.34952312 grams
so 1 gram = 0.03527396 ounces
I hope this will help you to calculate your zakat.
Dzul-Malaysia.

Insha Allah - this will help those trying to understand zakat calculation:
One Tola is 0.375 "Troy Oz", or around 11.6638 grams, so your 7.5 tola equals = (7.5 x 11.664) => 87.49 grams
Reference for Tola measurement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tola_%28measure%29
So - for gold - you should get it weighed and then pay Zakat on gold as follows:
1. If it is less than 7.5 tola - you don't have to pay anything.
2. If it is more than 7.5 tola - then you pay 2.5% of it (in money)
Checking Dawn Newspaper (Oct 6th 2006) - Gold Price is listed as:
Rs. 11,434/- for 10 gram.
So you don't have to pay Zakat - if value of gold you have is less than (11,434/10)x87.49 = Rs. 100,036.07
And 2.5 of this Nisab is = Rs. 2,500.90
If you have jewelry of value more than Rs. 100,036.07 (say Average as of Ramadhan 2006) then you simply pay 2.5% of it in Zakat.
If you want to find out equivalent price of Gold (and Silver) - you can do so at:
www.goldprice.org, or check local newspapers

The gold price is for 24 karat but most of our jewelry is of 22 karat. Shouldn't there be an adjustment to the gold price per oz? Also, what about your money in 401k and the deduction for loans? I guess these finer points be addressed when creating the calculator.

Please refer me to chapter and verse in the Quraan where the percentage is stipulated that one has to give as Zakaat.
I have read need to give Zakaat in various versus of The Holy Quraan with no mention of any fixed percentage.
Please expalin this to me..........
