Can't figure out how to really make a difference in Pakistan? Here are just some ideas you can use to volunteer.

1. Translate health information into Urdu and get it distributed in Pakistan

Americans can easily access enormous amounts of literature about health through doctors and the internet, but Pakistanis don't have the same accessibility. Reverse this trend by translating health information into Urdu and distributing it in Pakistan.

2. Fight tobacco in Pakistan

The Pakistan Pediatrics Association in 1997 said that 1,000 to 1,2000 school going children between the ages of 6 to 16 years take up smoking everyday. Launch an anti-tobacco campaign in your neighborhood in Pakistan with the help of local residents.

3. Put Urdu literature on cassette for the benefit of the blind and elderly

4. Start up a women's discussion group about Pakistan

5. Organize an open house about Pakistan

Host an open house at your Pak-American community center and share different aspects of Pakistani culture (i.e. food, art, literature) with the local neighborhood.

6. Start a website about some aspect of Pakistan

When it comes to Pakistan, most websites focus on music, lollywood, fashion and food, but there's much more to our country than that. Start a website that focuses on some aspect of the country that has not been covered before or take an existing topic and give it a unique perspective.

7. Establish a fund in your mother's name to benefit a project in Pakistan

Establish a fund or an organization in your or a family member's name to support a worthy cause or project in Pakistan. For instance, you can help build a check dam in an arid area of Pakistan or support a micro-credit program which allows individuals to start their own enterprises.

8. Establish a Pak-American youth award in your city

A Pakistani-American youth award recognizes excellence amongst Pakistani-American youth in a specific field and provides much needed encouragement, appreciation and self-confidence to Pakistani-American youth, many of whom, like other ethnic minorities, often suffer from a lack of self-esteem and self-respect.

9. Teach Pak-Americans how to deal with discrimination

Discrimination is still an ugly reality in America and Pak-Americans still have to deal with this kind of overt prejudice. Help them, learn how to stand up for their rights and fight against discrimination here.

10. Adopt a public school in Pakistan

According to the report Human Development in South Asia 1998, 70 per cent of the schools in Pakistan have no toilets, 68 percent no drinking water, 92 percent no playgrounds, 60 per cent no boundary walls and 16 percent are without a building. You can sponsor or "adopt" a public school and help provide for its needs to help Pakistani children gain hope for their future.
